When Can My Baby Start Swimming Lessons?

Many parents wonder when the right time is to introduce their baby to the water. The good news is that babies can start swimming lessons from as young as 6 weeks old.

Why Start Early?

Babies are born with natural reflexes that make them comfortable in water. The earlier you introduce your baby to swimming, the more they can benefit from these innate abilities:

  • Dive reflex: Babies naturally hold their breath when submerged
  • Swimming reflex: Newborns make swimming movements when placed in water
  • Comfort in water: Early exposure builds lifelong water confidence

What to Expect in Baby Swimming Lessons

At London Baby Swim, our classes for babies from 6 weeks are designed to be gentle, fun, and confidence-building:

  1. Warm pools: Our pools are heated to 33°C - perfect for tiny bodies
  2. Small classes: Maximum 8 babies per class ensures individual attention
  3. Parent participation: You'll be in the water with your baby throughout
  4. Highly trained instructors: All our teachers are experienced professionals

Is My Baby Ready?

Your baby is ready for swimming lessons if:

  • They are at least 6 weeks old
  • They have had their first set of vaccinations (not required but recommended)
  • They are generally healthy
  • You feel comfortable taking them into the water
